Cloudflare Edge AI Platform Expansion Analysis (NET)
Cloudflare's thesis is deceptively simple: own the network edge and tax every packet of internet traffic that touches it. The company operates 330+ data centers in 120+ countries — the most distributed network in the world outside of the hyperscalers. As AI inference shifts from centralized GPU clusters to edge locations closer to end users, Cloudflare's infrastructure becomes the natural execution layer.
The Catalyst: Workers AI and Edge Inference
Cloudflare is positioning itself as the AI inference layer of the internet:
- Workers AI: Serverless AI inference running on Cloudflare's edge network. Developers deploy ML models (LLMs, image recognition, embeddings) that execute within milliseconds of end users — no cold starts, no GPU provisioning, no infrastructure management. This converts Cloudflare from a security/CDN vendor into an AI compute platform.
- AI Gateway: A proxy layer that sits between applications and LLM providers (OpenAI, Anthropic, Cohere). AI Gateway provides caching, rate limiting, analytics, and fallback routing — essential infrastructure for any production AI application. This is a Trojan horse: once developers route their AI traffic through Cloudflare, they're locked into the network.
- R2 + Vectorize: Object storage (R2) with zero egress fees and a native vector database (Vectorize) for RAG applications. Together, they make Cloudflare the cheapest and fastest platform for storing embeddings and retrieval data at the edge.
: Cloudflare's core CDN/Security TAM is ~$35B. Adding AI inference, edge compute, and developer platform services expands the addressable market to $100B+ — a 3x increase without entering any market where Cloudflare lacks a structural advantage.
